X Factor Joe McElderry turned on Sheffield Christmas lights

More than 35,000 people turned out to see South Shields X Factor winner Joe McElderry turn on the Christmas lights in Sheffield in 2010.

The 19-year-old, from Westoe, was joined by chart stars Scouting For Girls and local radio presenters for the switch-on, where he performed last single Ambitions and the soon-to-be released Someone Wake Me Up, also from his debut album Wide Awake.

About 35,000 people turned up for the day's events across the city centre, which began at 1pm.

Coun Roger Davison, from Sheffield City Council, said: "Between the Real Radio star line-up on the Barker's Pool stage and the guest appearance from CBeebies newest pop craze The ZingZillas, the Christmas light switch-on event was a fantastic family day out."

Writing on Twitter, Joe said: "Amazing crowd. Thanks for dancing with me, hahaha."

His Sheffield date was the latest switch-on, having already lit up Blackpool, Manchester and London's Regent Street.

Joe will introduce a special advance gala screening of The Chronicles Of Narnia – The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader, at Gateshead Metrocentre's Odeon Cinema.

Joe, who recorded the title track for the film, will speak about his experience since winning last year's X Factor, and show the video for his new single, Someone Wake Me Up, which features footage from the movie.

The film will then be screened at 5pm on Sunday, December 5 2010.
The track is due to be released on December 6 2010.
